Pandora Sphinx Moth

Pandora Sphinx Moth

September 3, 2013 Bugs and Crud

Late summer and fall is such a great time to find caterpillar creeps.  Here we have an early instar stage of the Pandora sphinx moth.  Though the caterpillar in this picture is barely an inch long, it may grow as long as the width of your hand.

Their favorite foods are grape vines and viginia creeper.  This one was spotted on a volunteer grape vine.  Hopefully it won't fall victim to parasitic wasps, which claim many of this species, and I'll be able to watch it grow to maturity.
