Calico Scale

Calico Scale

May 7, 2013 Bugs and Crud

Calico scale is a soft scale creep thought to have been introduced through San Francisco in the 1900s.  This insect affects many species of trees and shrubs.  Most recently I've seen a large population of calico scale on little gem magnolias.  These scales excrete large amounts of honey dew, and may contribute to overall tree decline in large numbers.

Like most scales treatment during their crawler stage is recommended.  There are definetly calico scale crawlers active now.  To learn more check out this site: http://woodypests.cas.psu.edu/factsheets/insectfactsheets/html/Calico_Scale.html
