Lightning Protection Solutions

Each year, thousands of unprotected trees are struck by lightning throughout the United States. Many of those trees struck are in urban landscapes and can be a life-ending event for the tree or even humans. Can anything be done to protect your trees? YES! Lightning protection systems aren’t just for homes and large buildings. The same principles and can be applied to trees to provide them with a measure of protection against this powerful force.

For over forty years, our Heartwood Tree Care team has provided the best lightning protection for trees to homes across North Carolina, including Charlotte, Asheville, and Lake Norman. With a crew of certified arborists, numerous awards, and countless trees saved, it's no wonder why we're the region's most trusted partner.

The Dangers of Lightning Damage to a Tree

Lightning strikes pose a significant threat to trees. The intense heat generated by the electrical discharge can cause severe damage, including exploded bark, shattered branches, and even trunk splitting. While some trees may appear unharmed, internal damage to the water-conducting tissues can lead to long-term decline and death. Additionally, lightning strikes often strip away protective bark, leaving trees vulnerable to insects and diseases that can further weaken their structure, increasing the risk of falling limbs or complete tree failure.

FAQs About Lightning Protection

Yes. Due to size (taller trees are more likely to be struck), some differences in biology and physiology, and other factors, certain trees are more susceptible to strikes. Below is a list of some common species in the eastern portion of the US and their susceptibility to lightning strikes. Not all areas of the country are equally affected by lightning strikes. However, in the Charlotte, NC region, lighting is common enough that it warrants the need for tree protection.

A tree lightning protection system, also known as a lightning suppression system, is designed to provide a less resistant path to the ground than the trunk. This effectively diverts electrical current away from the tree during a lightning strike. The system consists of the following components:

Terminal: This component is installed at the tree's highest point and is specially designed to attract lightning. It acts as the initial point of contact for a lightning strike.
Conductor Cable: A long section of copper extends from the top of the tree to the ground, providing a low-resistance path for the electrical current. It is fastened to the trunk using specialized attachments every few feet.
Fasteners: These secure the conductor cable to the tree trunk. They are installed at regular intervals along the length of the trunk to ensure the cable remains in place and maintains contact with the tree.
Ground Rod or Metal Plate: These are placed in the soil at a distance from the tree and connected to the conductor cable via an underground extension. They can be a single ground rod or other metal objects buried in the earth. This component is the final point for dissipating the electrical charge into the surrounding soil.
Underground Extension: This connects the vertical conductor cable to the ground rod. It extends horizontally away from the tree, helping to direct the charge away from the tree's root system.
Surrounding Soil: The soil is the ultimate dispersal medium for the electrical charge. It absorbs and dissipates the energy from the lightning strike, helping to complete the protective circuit of the system.

Perks of Tree Lightning Protection Charlotte Residents Should Know

Given the region's susceptibility to thunderstorms, especially during summer months, a properly installed lightning protection system can safeguard lives and valuable assets. These systems redirect lightning strikes safely into the ground, preventing structural damage, electrical fires, and damage to sensitive electronics. Additionally, having lightning protection may lead to insurance discounts and increased property value. By investing in this protective measure, Charlotte homeowners can enjoy greater peace of mind during severe weather events.

Is Lightning Protection Expensive?

A good portion of the cost of a lightning protection system comes from the needed materials. The cost of installing a system will always be less than the cost of removing a struck tree. Lightning protection systems are an investment in your tree that can help protect it for years or decades to come. If some other pruning work is already being done on the tree, it makes sense to explore the option of installing a system at the same time.

Getting Your Lightning Protection System Installed by Heartwood

At Heartwood Tree Care, our certified arborists follow a scrupulous process to install your tree lightning protection system. We begin with thoroughly assessing your trees and identifying those at the highest risk. Our team then carefully installs copper conductors along the trunk and major branches, making sure they extend at least ten feet below the ground. We also use specialized fasteners that allow for tree growth without damage.

Trusting your tree's protection to a certified arborist is crucial, as improper installation through DIY attempts can cause more harm than good. With a background education in tree biology and in-depth training to safely work at great heights, we know just how to keep your landscape protected.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've used Heartwood for the past 7 years at our house. Each time they handle the entire situation with professionalism - and they are fast! This particular time, our tree was in a complicated spot wedged between our property and our neighbors with multiple structures surrounding it. And yet, they came in and got it done - had to move a lot of equipment in and around the yard, but took care of the yard in the process and cleaned up (per usual).

Fantastic work and that's why we keep coming back to this crew year after year.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had Heartwood Tree Care remove 4 palm trees in my pool area. They were very adamant about making sure nothing go into the pool and covered the entire pool. They did a FANTATIC job, very professional, all the crew members were considerate and cleaned the area as if it was their own property. I have lots of trees and Heartwood Tree Care is my go to company . They did such a good job my neighbors called me to get the company that I used, THANK YOU CARLOS & HEARTWOOD CREW MEMBERS

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. To my surprise, Heartwood's bid on the removal of a diseased pine tree was no higher than the best I received from little guy companies. Plus, Heartwood agreed to compost rather than just dump the chips. Everyone I dealt with there performed with competence and professionalism. The crew brought all the necessary equipment to complete the job efficiently, without damage to neighboring trees, and finished with a better cleanup than I imagined possible. Very happy!

Great company, great people. Heartwood Tree Care delivered a level of service we did not know existed anymore. For each step of the process to remove a very large, very leaning tree — from supplying an estimate to diligently returning to their exact place some items from the yard we did not think to move in advance — the entire crew was thoughtful, professional, and precise. We highly recommend them.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Heartwood tree has given us excellent service for our old trees - helping us to preserve the large old walnuts , pecans, cherries, magnolias, etc. They have been very informative with everything that has been done and not recommended unnecessary services. David has been amazing with his care of all our trees and plants - I can trust him (and Heartwood) to have the best care of our yard in their plans.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I reached out to Heartwood Tree Service because I quickly realized how overwhelmed I was getting with all the conflicting information online to care for my fruit trees and ensure they do well for years to come. One of them in particular is very special to me as it was planted as a memorial tree for my father that passed and it developed black knot fungus on it only a few years after planting. I received reassurance that it will be OK as I caught it early and was given many pointers on everything from pruning to fertilizer to pest and fungal control & prevention. Tommy was very kind and helpful for me and provided a lot of info that was very specific not just regarding different trees but also regarding our region and the different issues and temperature swings we have in Western NC. I am so thankful and highly recommend Heartwood to anyone that needs some help/guidance/maintenance done! Thank you so much!!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Twenty+ Stars! “Never have we ever” received more professional, talented, responsive, honest, friendly, responsible, reliable service, period. Tommy Masters responded immediately to our recent ice storm issues (we live in a challenging microclimate). He and his team are simply beyond super stars! The project was scheduled quickly, and the work of the team (Yona, Christine, Jordan, and Todd) was simply beyond words, just like Tommy. We remain in awe and will rely upon Heartwood for all of our future tree work, forever. We have already scheduled additional complex projects with Heartwood and simply cannot recommend the Heartwood team highly enough. And, most of them are certified arborists! ALL are extremely qualified and seasoned, experienced professionals. They are the real deal! Thank you for a job very, very well done!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What an extraordinary team. They were removing trees from the hillside behind my home yesterday and a dropped branch caused a large rock to skid and hit my vinyl siding. Yano promised to take care of it, but when he came back the same day with siding to fix it — I was blown away. That kind of responsiveness deserves recognition! A company that does seem to have their heart in what they do.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tommy at Heartwood was great to work with. Got a quick and fair quote/consult, and they worked me into the queue to get my tree cut down within a couple weeks given there were dying branches over my roof. They were prompt, did great work, and I would absolutely use them again. I felt the price was fair and reasonable as well.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Oh man, we had a tree go down across our driveway and we couldn’t get out. Having just driven into town, we needed groceries and were stuck! I spoke with Lisa (I think), she reached out to someone who was scheduled to be in the area and promised to call me if he couldn’t come. Within an hour, Tommy was here and removed most of the stump so we could get out. He gave us a quote, recommended we address some potential problems, and the crew came and was here and gone before 5pm the same day. Saved our butts and we’re so grateful!
