Professional Tree Removal by Certified Arborists

When mature trees develop structural hazards or invasive root systems, safe removal often requires specialized arborist expertise and professional-grade equipment. Heartwood Tree Care delivers comprehensive tree removal in the Charlotte, Asheville, and Lake Norman areas. We combine our knowledge from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and over 45 years of experience serving residential and commercial properties across west-central North Carolina.

Our team evaluates each tree's condition, structural integrity and long-term viability before recommending removal. We prioritize preservation whenever possible, but when removal becomes necessary to protect people and property, we execute it with precision.

Tree Removal Services

Our Professional Tree Removal Techniques

Each removal project requires an individualized approach based on tree size, health status, proximity to buildings and site accessibility. After conducting a thorough tree risk assessment of your specimen and the surrounding environment, our arborists determine whether manual climbing techniques or crane assistance can support a safe, efficient removal process.

Caldwell Truck in a Residential Driveway

Manual Removals/Removals By Hand

Traditional climbing methods provide precision control for removals in tight residential spaces. Our ISA-certified climbers use advanced rigging systems, specialized ropes, and precision cutting techniques that follow safety standards to dismantle trees section by section, starting from the crown and working downward. Before any cuts are made, we assess these factors:

Branch weight distribution
Lean angles
Nearby obstacles such as power lines and structures

Ground crews position safety zones and guide each section to predetermined landing areas using rope systems that help reduce the risk of unpredictable falls. This method proves particularly effective in historic neighborhoods where mature canopies overhang homes, fences and garden beds.

Crane-Assisted Tree Removals

Boom trucks and crane systems can provide a safer solution for large trees near structures. Crane systems allow us to lift large tree sections vertically, reducing many of the hazards associated with gravity-dependent felling near homes, utility infrastructure and high-value landscapes. This approach offers these advantages:

Reduces labor time
Minimizes ground impact
Provides a controlled option for trees in confined spaces

Our crane operators work with certified climbers who secure each section before making precision cuts. Once detached, sections are lifted clear and lowered to staging areas. Crane work proves especially valuable for large-scale removals in Dilworth's residential blocks and Plaza Midwood's tree-lined streets, where conventional felling would endanger structures.

Tree Stump Grinding

Stump grinding helps address the hazards and maintenance problems that remain after tree removal. Following tree removal, remaining stumps present ongoing challenges including pest attraction, fungal growth and unwanted sprouting. Our stump grinding equipment reduces stumps to wood chips several inches below soil level, reducing tripping hazards and clearing space for new plantings or lawn restoration.

The grinding process generates mulch material that can be repurposed for garden beds or hauled away. By addressing root systems at their source, we help reduce the risk of persistent regrowth that often follows incomplete stump removal.

When Does Tree Removal Become Necessary?

There are plenty of reasons why tree removal becomes necessary, including improving property safety and health or preparing for new construction projects. If any of the following scenarios sound familiar, reach out to our team for tree removal services in Charlotte, Lake Norman, or Asheville, NC, today:

Diseased or Dead Trees

It’s never an easy decision to remove a tree, but sometimes it’s necessary for a dead or actively dying tree or a severely diseased tree. You might notice a lot of strange fungal growth on the trunk or major limbs, cracks or splits in the trunk, or a tree that’s starting to lean, all of which are common signs a tree is at the end of its life. Removal of these sick trees is often the best way to protect your property and keep other trees healthy.

Safety Hazards

Sometimes, trees can pose risks to structures, power lines, or areas where people frequently walk or drive. Removing these trees eliminates potential dangers and gives you peace of mind. After all, nobody wants to worry about a tree falling on their house during the next big storm.

Storm-Damaged Tree

Storms, high winds, or lightning strikes can cause tree damage unexpectedly. When this happens, removing the tree safely and promptly prevents further property damage and helps you get your yard back to normal as soon as possible. We’ve helped many homeowners recover from storm damage, and we know how important it is to act quickly in these situations.

Noticeable Lean

Trees with noticeable leans have an increased risk of toppling over and potentially harming people, property, and nearby power lines. If you spot a tree leaning in your yard, our certified arborists will help assess the situation and determine whether tree cutting or complete removal is necessary to protect your property.

Landscape and Property Development

While we always advocate for preserving trees when we can (we are tree lovers, after all), we understand that sometimes removal is necessary for property development. We’ll work with you to find the best solution that balances your development needs with environmental considerations.

Wrong Tree for Local Climate Conditions

When trees aren’t well-suited to our local conditions, they often need more TLC and are more likely to have problems with diseases and pests. In some cases, the kindest thing we can do is remove these struggling trees and replace them with native species or ones that are better adapted to our climate.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've used Heartwood for the past 7 years at our house. Each time they handle the entire situation with professionalism - and they are fast! This particular time, our tree was in a complicated spot wedged between our property and our neighbors with multiple structures surrounding it. And yet, they came in and got it done - had to move a lot of equipment in and around the yard, but took care of the yard in the process and cleaned up (per usual).

Fantastic work and that's why we keep coming back to this crew year after year.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had Heartwood Tree Care remove 4 palm trees in my pool area. They were very adamant about making sure nothing go into the pool and covered the entire pool. They did a FANTATIC job, very professional, all the crew members were considerate and cleaned the area as if it was their own property. I have lots of trees and Heartwood Tree Care is my go to company . They did such a good job my neighbors called me to get the company that I used, THANK YOU CARLOS & HEARTWOOD CREW MEMBERS

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. To my surprise, Heartwood's bid on the removal of a diseased pine tree was no higher than the best I received from little guy companies. Plus, Heartwood agreed to compost rather than just dump the chips. Everyone I dealt with there performed with competence and professionalism. The crew brought all the necessary equipment to complete the job efficiently, without damage to neighboring trees, and finished with a better cleanup than I imagined possible. Very happy!

Great company, great people. Heartwood Tree Care delivered a level of service we did not know existed anymore. For each step of the process to remove a very large, very leaning tree — from supplying an estimate to diligently returning to their exact place some items from the yard we did not think to move in advance — the entire crew was thoughtful, professional, and precise. We highly recommend them.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Heartwood tree has given us excellent service for our old trees - helping us to preserve the large old walnuts , pecans, cherries, magnolias, etc. They have been very informative with everything that has been done and not recommended unnecessary services. David has been amazing with his care of all our trees and plants - I can trust him (and Heartwood) to have the best care of our yard in their plans.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I reached out to Heartwood Tree Service because I quickly realized how overwhelmed I was getting with all the conflicting information online to care for my fruit trees and ensure they do well for years to come. One of them in particular is very special to me as it was planted as a memorial tree for my father that passed and it developed black knot fungus on it only a few years after planting. I received reassurance that it will be OK as I caught it early and was given many pointers on everything from pruning to fertilizer to pest and fungal control & prevention. Tommy was very kind and helpful for me and provided a lot of info that was very specific not just regarding different trees but also regarding our region and the different issues and temperature swings we have in Western NC. I am so thankful and highly recommend Heartwood to anyone that needs some help/guidance/maintenance done! Thank you so much!!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Twenty+ Stars! “Never have we ever” received more professional, talented, responsive, honest, friendly, responsible, reliable service, period. Tommy Masters responded immediately to our recent ice storm issues (we live in a challenging microclimate). He and his team are simply beyond super stars! The project was scheduled quickly, and the work of the team (Yona, Christine, Jordan, and Todd) was simply beyond words, just like Tommy. We remain in awe and will rely upon Heartwood for all of our future tree work, forever. We have already scheduled additional complex projects with Heartwood and simply cannot recommend the Heartwood team highly enough. And, most of them are certified arborists! ALL are extremely qualified and seasoned, experienced professionals. They are the real deal! Thank you for a job very, very well done!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What an extraordinary team. They were removing trees from the hillside behind my home yesterday and a dropped branch caused a large rock to skid and hit my vinyl siding. Yano promised to take care of it, but when he came back the same day with siding to fix it — I was blown away. That kind of responsiveness deserves recognition! A company that does seem to have their heart in what they do.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tommy at Heartwood was great to work with. Got a quick and fair quote/consult, and they worked me into the queue to get my tree cut down within a couple weeks given there were dying branches over my roof. They were prompt, did great work, and I would absolutely use them again. I felt the price was fair and reasonable as well.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Oh man, we had a tree go down across our driveway and we couldn’t get out. Having just driven into town, we needed groceries and were stuck! I spoke with Lisa (I think), she reached out to someone who was scheduled to be in the area and promised to call me if he couldn’t come. Within an hour, Tommy was here and removed most of the stump so we could get out. He gave us a quote, recommended we address some potential problems, and the crew came and was here and gone before 5pm the same day. Saved our butts and we’re so grateful!
