What Is Plant Health Care?
Plant health care (PHC) is a proactive, holistic approach to keeping trees and shrubs healthy by addressing problems before they become serious. This means, rather than reacting to visible decline, our specialists focus on routine monitoring and provide customized treatments that support long-term plant vitality. For many of our clients in Charlotte, Lake Norman, and Asheville, NC, this often includes evaluating soil conditions, identifying pests or diseases, improving root health, and ensuring each tree receives the nutrients it needs to thrive. It can also involve time-specific applications of preventative treatments.
Our program is designed to treat tall trees as well as ornamental and woody shrubs. So, whether you’re a homeowner looking to preserve cherished shade trees or a business aiming to maintain a healthy, impressive property, our ISA-certified arborists are here to help.

Customized Approach
Because every tree and plant we work with is unique, our arborists customize treatments to address their specific needs. We do so by carefully assessing the site and taking into account the plant’s age, existing issues, and the environmental conditions of your property.
Preventive and Curative Treatments
Our preventative maintenance treatments tackle known pests and diseases proactively, while our curative care handles any conditions or issues that emerge during the year.
Sustainable Solutions
At Heartwood Tree Care, we’re dedicated to following environmentally responsible practices. As such, all of our plant health care solutions are intentionally designed and administered to minimize the impact on the environment and non-target organisms as much as possible.
Plant Health Assessment
Our holistic approach to plant care involves assessing the individual needs of the plant by evaluating overall structure, foliage quality, root conditions, soil composition, and signs of pests or disease. This detailed inspection allows us to identify issues early, understand the underlying causes of stress, and determine exactly what each plant needs to regain or maintain optimal health.
Once the assessment is complete, our team provides clear recommendations tailored to the unique needs of your property. This may include soil amendments, targeted treatments, pruning, or long-term plant health care strategies designed to strengthen and protect your trees over time. As such, you can trust that our plant health care services in Charlotte, Lake Norman, and Asheville, NC, will help your trees thrive from one season to the next.

Plant Growth Regulators
Plant growth regulators help reduce unwanted shoot growth, improve overall structure, and redirect the tree’s energy toward root development and long-term health. This service is especially beneficial for managing fast-growing species and maintaining tree stability. It is also helpful for trees near construction projects, as the growth regulator encourages new root development to replace lost capacity from grading or compaction.

Visible Decay
A decaying tree is the last thing anyone wants to see in their backyard. Unfortunately, it happens, often due to inadequate watering, pest infestations, or environmental stresses such as extreme temperatures. Whatever the case may be, our plant health care services in Charlotte, Lake Norman, and Asheville, NC, can help determine if the tree can be saved and how to effectively treat it.
Strange Leaves
Are your tree’s leaves an unseasonably brown color? Or are they dropping prematurely or sporting holes? These symptoms can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, pest infestations, or disease, all of which can compromise your tree’s structure and beauty.
Thankfully, our plant health care services include diagnosing the root cause of the discolored leaves and devising a treatment plan to help the tree recover. Placing your trust in the team at Heartwood Tree Care will not only raise the chances your tree will be saved but also lower the likelihood you’ll need to remove and replace it.
Poor Growth
When your trees don’t grow and thrive the way you expect them to, that’s the perfect time to call us for plant health care services. Our certified arborists will investigate the cause of the stunted tree growth and offer a personalized solution. With our plant care expertise, your trees will obtain the support they need to become beautiful and healthy once again.
Fungal Growth
Fungal growth can happen because of excessive moisture or soil that lacks proper drainage. Regardless of why it is occurring, it is a serious problem that shouldn’t be ignored, as it can eventually lead to the death of the tree if left unaddressed. When you reach out to us for plant health care in Charlotte, Lake Norman, or Asheville, NC, we’ll stop the spread of fungus and safeguard the root system of your tree through a variety of specialized treatments.

- Root Rot: A serious soil-borne pathogen in poorly drained clay soils can affect a wide variety of trees and shrubs.
- Cankers: Destructive fungi can result in branch dieback and resin bleeding.
- Powdery Mildew: Recognizable by a white, dusty coating on leaves, this disease affects the aesthetics and vitality of crape myrtles and dogwoods.
- Leaf Spot: Various fungal leaf spots can prematurely defoliate trees, weakening them over time if left untreated.
Common Pest Infestations We Manage

- Emerald Ash Borer: This invasive beetle is highly destructive to ash trees. Proactive treatment is essential, as damage is often fatal once visible.
- Scale Insects: Hard and soft scales (such as crape myrtle bark scale, azalea bark scale, Japanese maple scale, and lecanium scale) suck sap from branches, weakening the tree and often leaving a sticky residue (honeydew) and black sooty mold.
- Aphids & Spider Mites: These common pests feed on plant juices, causing yellowing, stippling, and curled leaves.
- Bagworms: Often found on evergreens like arborvitae and junipers, these caterpillars construct protective bags and can strip a tree of foliage rapidly.
- Japanese Beetles: These metallic beetles skeletonize leaves, leaving behind only the veins and stressing the tree.
- Azalea Lacebugs: These pests feed on the undersides of azalea leaves, sucking out plant fluids and causing a bleached or stippled yellow appearance on top.
- Oakworms: While they rarely kill a healthy tree, these caterpillars can cause noticeable defoliation and create a nuisance for homeowners due to the accumulation of frass (droppings) on driveways and patios below.
